how to configure GCC-2.95.3

i download gcc-2.95.3,but it need configure,complie.iread its readme documents,and confused by the contents:why we should make a objdir(he recommend the objdir can't be include in scrdir).but i don't know where scrdir is.i want to skip this step and try to configure it ,but i failed and was told to give target.what is target?can you tell me?my system is redhat7.3,the kernel is 2.4.18-3.

target就是目标平台，如果你不是交叉编译，target是不用指定的。
