"root=/dev/hda8",have problem?
when i usr 2.4.20-686 to up my system ,the kernel panic atcann't find root and ask me to append a corret root position.but u can see in my conf file that 2.2.20 kernel can boot correctly while using the same argument
i used apt-get kernel-image-2.4.20-686

# initrd /boot/initrd-2.4.20-686.img 如果你的磁盘需要利用的模块不能加载或者没有内嵌，就可能出现这样的事情。
比如你是用scsi，raid，reiserfs，ext3.支持这些东西的模块最好内嵌在内核里面 2.4.XX-ARCH kernel image不支持reiserfs root分区
因为是将reiserfs做为模块，而非内嵌
