Linux

Agreed. The question is, when is 'evenutally'. If the fs is, at one time,
quite full and you delete random files (randomly paced, that is), you
will of course get high fragmentation. Every filesystem is affected by
this fragmentation (ok, there's bound to be exceptions, but anyway), the
question is: how bad, and how soon.

ext2 is designed in such a way that it doesn't fragment badly. Ext
(ext1?) did fragment, and so there was a defragger. Ext2 basically
performs some amount of defragmentation on the fly in how it allocates
disc blocks. It will, IIRC, try and keep files defragmented when it
writes them, and it will also try and keep free space in large chunks so
that new files can be written without fragmentation.
