ES56T PI(2898)在linux下如何在安装？

我的ES56T PI(289modem在windows下好用，但在linux下却怎么也安装不上。我用光盘和网上down下的安装程序共计四个，安装个遍，也不能装上。敬请高手指点。
程序包中的readme基本上都是这样的：
1. Type " mkdir " to create a directory " Essmodem"
2. Go into that directory and Type " mcopy a:."
3. Key in " sh mdminstall "
而安装程序则有些不同：
有的是：

rm /dev/essmodem >NULL
mknod /dev/essmodem c 127 1
rm /dev/modem >NULL
ln -s /dev/essmodem /dev/modem

You can also run './Essuninst' to uninstall the driver.

不知这两个程序有什么不一样。
另外：readme中要求建立的目录Essmodem应该建在哪个目录下。我是建在/dev/下的，不知有没有关系？
安装显示的信息是：
x行,rmmod command not found
xx行，insmod command not found
就没有了。
在win98下是com4，在win2000下是com3有区别吗？
