printk出的内容在哪里看？没有messages

我装的是Magic linux 1.2版本的，在/var/log/下面并没有messages，而且我的locate也用不起来，好像是没有装：
[root@node2 /]# locate messages
warning: locate: could not open database: /var/lib/slocate/slocate.db: No such file or directory
warning: You need to run the 'updatedb' command (as root) to create the database.
[root@node2 /]#
我想用locate，也想找到messages，请高手帮助！
