which laptop u use? which graphic chip u use?
dell inspriron 8200 use geforce go 440. has this problem. the driver has conflict with apm or acpi.

current acpi implementation can not solve all problems.
and acpi support only comes from kernel. so upgrade kernel is enough, comparing with reinstalling linux.
