question: compiling

i have red hat 7.2 with the kernel 2.4.7-10.
i installed kernel-source in order to compile.
but when i ran make xconfig and make menuconfig, i see different settings of the kernel. does one of them correspond to the settings of the current kernel or not at all?

i think "make xconfig" and "make menuconfig" are just to bring up the user GUI interface. So the options in the kernel are nothing to do with which comannd u use.
