What is the current state of things ?
Currently, nothing works. If you're not a developer, you're not interested in this at all.

NVidia is keeping the documentations of their hardware secret, so making a free (as in freedom) driver for NVidia cards will requires reverse engineering, which is too difficult.

That's actually one of the reasons why I didn't buy an NVidia card. The integrated graphic chip on VIA P4M800 is just enough for me.
