Good point!
Why not when you think it's true? When your exprience with Linux is indeed more stable than Windows?
One month uptime is not even worth mentioning!! Do you keep your system up and running all the time? Do you use it for multiple tasks all at the same time? Have you lost a week's work in a blink because Windows just blue screened on you? As an example, my client, a scientist doing research on global ecology, used to run their GIS imaging software on Windows 2000. Their analysis program generally runs for days before completion and generates large multi-gigabyte files as results. They consistantly lose their days of work due to Windows crashes. This is the case across some twenty very high end workstations. We moved them to Linux since January, and they have yet to have the need to reboot even once!! That's a strong statement for Linux stability. Why should I not use this as a case study for my other clients????
Yes. Agreed.
Done all that. It helped.
A great tool. Made life easy for me for a long time.
How about updating kernel over the network? Upgrading a 1024 node cluster to a new release in less than two hours? Remote mangement for Windows 98? Remote mangement for hundreds or thousands of systems? You can probably do it with some software, but these will be expensive! One example, one of the national labs in the U.S. has over 4000 Linux systems, their Unix and Linux system administration team consists of only 6 people supporting thousands of users world wide. On the other hand, they have 20 people in their NT group, supporting some 2700 users on campus locally. This is a fine case for TOC study as well as ease of maintanance due to stability advantages.
[/quote]
I used Windows extensively for many years as well, and continue to use it for many things. I am very happy with it as I have done about the same thing you did. However, the tasks you are doing with your computer are not all the things the system can do. It is only when you experience how computers are used in truely intensive tasks, such as scientific researches, high energy physics researches, human genome projects, astrophysics studies, bioinformatics, real time transaction handling in banking, and so on..., that you will come to understand what it means to be stable. A project to find sub atomic substances takes months if not years of running data analysis on systems that cannot fail even once! A glitch in the bank's transaction handling system means millions of dollars lost! There's a reason why these people chose Linux instead of Windows, it's STABILITY and ease of management.
That's when I finally realize what stability means. So, I say "Linux is more stable than Windows!"
Cheers!
