Darwin is a micro kernel system based on mach 2.0 (or 3.0?) and it include lots of 4.4bsd(freebsd? because a kernel developor of freebsd has left freebsd group for it) code for promotment.
then,  Darwin is not a unix like system but lots of people think it is a bsd like system.
BTW, Mac Os X is a desktop system for end user and using Darwin as its kernel.
