Also, with the source code in hand, if you run into problems, you can still get a good programmer to help you fix it. Otherwise, you will have to prey that your vendor will fix it for you.
For example, Red Hat 9 does not install on SATA drives directly on a new Intel 875P chipset based motherboard. My friend, who is really good with Red Hat, fixed the installer and created a set of CD that will allow me to install directly onto SATA drive in less than a day!! That's the benefit and power of open source. Even though the source code means nothing to me, I am lucky enough to have a good friend who is a great programmer to help me. Otherwise, I will have to wait for Red Hat's next release!
