【求助】请问debian的X如何配置？

本来没打算装debian的，因为对Linux还不怎么了解。结果想在Redhat9下升级内核玩的时候把系统搞坏了，刚好又看到了篇硬盘安装debian的文章，就打算装个debian。
用的是网络安装方式，下载sarge-i386-netinst.iso和另外几个文件到windows下的分区然后通过原来的grub控制台安装。安装完毕后在windows下用vmware装载整个硬盘来进行update以及安装X。
在安装X的过程中，我基本上都是按照默认的设置来选择的，结果等到我重启进入debian的时候，问题出来了：不能进入xwindow，提示Fatal server error: no screens found
运行startx的时候提示：
XIO: fatal IO error 104(Connection reset by peer) no X server ":0.0" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining

我看了下/etc/X11/XF86Config-4文件，很多都是vmware的东西，我感觉就是显卡设置之类的问题。在别人指点下运行dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86进行设置，但设置完以后XF86Config-4文件并没有变化。。。没办法下我只好自己凭感觉修改XF86Config-4文件（已备份），还是没搞定。。。

因为身边没有熟悉ati显卡配置的人，哪位指点我一下吗？最好能给我说一下XF86Config-4应该如何修改，谢谢
