内核从2.4.20升级到2.6.13.4 后遇到问题

从grub选择2.6.13.4启动之后出现下面的问题：Kernel panic-not Syncing:VFS:unable to mount root fs on Unknown-block(3,4)
这是什么原因?Grub.conf的内容如下:

我把root后面的内容全部删除之后还是出现这样的问题：Syncing:VFS:unable to mount root fs on Unknown-block(3,4)
望那位老兄跟我讲什么原因，要怎样才把问题消除
搞了好几天，还是这问题，很郁闷哪，望那位救救我吧

就是对源代码进行编译呀
make xconfig
make bzImage
make Modules
make Modules_install
make install
按照一些网上的资料把grub.conf改成上面的形式，就出现上面的问题。如果不改，也不能启动
求求那位救救我吧
