sudo vi /etc/fonts/fonts.conf
add /mnt/hda1/windows/fonts to the <dir> section

down a freetype from freetype.org
recompile it with BYTECODE support (you can search here if you don't know how to enable BYTECODE hinting)

select it in gnome-control-center
remember to choose the sharp style option with hinting!
