authentication fail!

很久之前我下了一个vmware,后来忘了,昨天才突然发现,本来我并不需要它,只是想玩玩,谁知这一玩就出事了,我按要求安上了,运行vmware命令时,提示要我执行vmware-config.pl,我就按提示做了,原来是一系列的关于它的配置,包括网络,用户名,密码等,跟着运行vmware-wizar.但最终安装还是失败了.
      这没什么,但当我用su切换到根用户时,就提示错误,切换到别的用户也不行.注销到登陆屏幕,结果无论用哪一个用户登陆都都提示"authentication fail!"(证实是真正的失败)失败都要证实,搞笑!而乱输一个用户名时,就只有一般错误提示.
     我进入单用户模式修改密码和/mnt/passwd文件,都不行.后来只好进行修复安装.虽然解决了,但毕竟比较麻烦.因为我遇到的关于登陆的问题比较多,所以想知道多一点解决手段.如果有谁还有其他简单一点的方法的话,望赐教.

If you already know this, forget it.

For security consideration, Linux (as UNIX) stores password in /etc/shadow, not in passwd.  To restore your password, empty the corresponding part of your account records in /etc/shadow. You can do that in single user mode. No need to touch /etc/passwd.

Use "man shadow" for more info. Good luck!
