VMWare can help you
use VMWare to create a new virtual machine, and set the harddisk to use the physical one, and then start the virtual machine, install FreeBSD to your harddisk.

then start your machine, maybe it will prompt you to mount the root file system, because the disk you installed from VMWare is different from the real one. use ufs:ad?s?? format to mount the Filesystem, then mount /usr/ filesystem, use vi to edit the /etc/fstab file to update it.
