vmware 4.0 doesn't support kernel 2.6.
the latest vmware 4.5 supports the 2.6 kernel, but it has some problem in its samba server(can't create chinese name files). so if you are using 2.6 kernel and vmware 4.5, you have to disable the vmware samba(the "vmware file sharing"), and use the linux samba.
