First, let me apologize for not knowing how to type Chinese. :-(
I agree with cjacker in that Linux still has a long way to go to match Windows in terms of number of applications, and there's a lot that Linux can learn from Windows, Mac, and other OSes as well. But mostly in the desktop areas.
In the server area, here are some of my observations at my customer's sites.
- Many Universities are switching their backbone to Linux
- Many research institutions are using Linux for super computing purposes, for example, the national laboratories in the US. Whether it's for high energy physics research, weapons development, satellite image analysis, or weather forecast, it's all running on Linux clusters.
- Most Hollywood movie studios are using Linux instead of SGI IRIX on their workstations and Linux cluster for rendering. Too many movies are made that way nowadays.
- Most network storage solutions are based on Linux. Even MSN uses storage technology based on Linux. Check out www.s8.com, which lists MSN as one of their premier customer.
- The major banks and financial institutions are switching to Linux for their data analysis and financial data feeding as well.
- Google has well over 15000 Linux servers, Baidu also uses Linux for their search engine, Akamai uses Linux to accelerate web contents for most major sites such as CNN, the list goes on and on....
How do I know that? I had the opportunity to work for a Linux company and deployed systems in all the places listed above!!
So, I think that Linux is maturing in a much faster pace then it's first few years. The enterprises are adopting Linux in whichever way possible nowadays. That's the trend in both US and Europe.
Just want to share some exciting experience with everyone here and hope that we will all continue support Linux and it's development in China. The potential benefit of using Open Source software is huge, especially in education, as the source code is readily available and free of charge. This creates equal opportunities for students who would otherwise be left out just because they cannot afford proprietary software. Please, don't tell me that they can get a pirated copy, even though that may be true. GPL is extremely important in making equal access to technology possible.
BTW, I also tested and installed Magic Linux 1.0. Looks great! Look forward to future releases!! |
